Jiko Tosha

The Jiko Tosha is a multi-fuel cookstove that has a design that integrates traditional components of a rocket stove with single-burner gas stove components. It includes rocket stove components such as an insulated combustion chamber, elevated steel grate, ash collector and cast iron pot support; and single-burner stove components such as an LP burner and LP regulator. The design also includes a stainless steel adaptable fuel bed for briquettes and charcoal.

F&M Industries does not have local technicians throughout Kenya. If a part of the stove breaks or gets damaged, it can be shipped to F&M’s manufacturing plant for repairs. To move the product from one place to the other, manufacturers use an existing local transport system.

Testing carried out by the Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI) on the stove performance determined that the thermal efficiency of the stove is at an average of 56% while using LPG as fuel, but when using charcoal the efficiency is at 33%. In terms of emissions, it was determined that while using LPG as fuel the CO and PM emissions are very low, but when using charcoal the emissions are average and fairly good respectively.

KIRDI concluded that the performance of this product is better compared to many existing in the market now, but recommends to improve the efficiency and CO emissions while using charcoal in order to achieve a Tier 4.

The safety concerns when using the product with biomass or charcoal as fuel are primarily related with harmful carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide emissions; and when using the product with gas fuel is gas leaking.

Another significant safety concern is domestic accidents such as accidental burning or spill-overs.
