Sachs: Foot-Dragging, Not Know-How, Blocks Clean Energy

The transition to clean energy is held up by the fossil fuel sector, not by any technical mystery, Dr. Jeffrey Sachs said at the Movin’ On Summit this month.

“The big problem is not that we lack the ‘what to do.’ Because we know how to move to wind, solar, hydro other zero-carbon energy sources. We have great leadership in zero-carbon mobility,” Dr. Sachs says.

Dr. Sachs, who is President of the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network, and Director of the Center for Sustainable Development at Columbia University in New York, New York (USA), offered the remarks in a charged speech at the summit.

“The problem has been the incumbent fossil-fuel sectors which have been politically powerful. And in petro-countries like the United States, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Canada… foot dragging. That’s been the problem,” Dr. Sachs says.

Movin’On launched in 2017 by Michelin, the French multinational tire manufacturer, billed as a co-created ecosystem for sustainable mobility. The fouyr-day summit broadcast from Paris, Montreal and Singapore, featuring 40 workshops and 80 speakers.
